Garnet Birthstone: The January Stone and Its Meaning

Is Garnet a birthstone?

Yes. Garnet is the modern birthstone for January.

By zodiac sign it belongs to Capricorn and Aquarius.

Properties

Composition Group of silicate minerals — almandine, pyrope, spessartine and others
Hardness (Mohs) 6.5–7.5
Crystal system Cubic
Color Deep red to orange, green, purple
Mined in India, Brazil, Madagascar, Tanzania, Russia

Worth knowing

Garnet is not one mineral but a family. Almandine gives the familiar deep red; tsavorite garnet is green and rarer than emerald.

History

Used since the Bronze Age; Egyptian garnet inlays date to roughly 3100 BCE.

Buying

Buying Garnet: fakes, value and treatments

What it is confused with

Red garnet is confused with ruby and spinel. Garnet is singly refractive and usually darker, often with a brownish or purplish tone, while ruby shows two slightly different reds when turned.

What decides the price

Garnet is a family of minerals. Red pyrope and almandine are common and affordable; green demantoid and tsavorite are the rare, expensive members. Garnets are rarely treated.

Where it is used

Crushed almandine is one of the main industrial abrasives, used on sandpaper and in water-jet cutting.

A less familiar fact

Garnets occur in almost every color, including rare color-change stones that look blue-green in daylight and purple under warm light.

Practical

Caring for Garnet

How to clean it

Warm soapy water and a soft brush. Safe in an ultrasonic cleaner unless the stone is fractured.

How to tell it is real

Garnet is rarely faked because it is inexpensive. Glass imitations give themselves away by air bubbles under magnification and by feeling warm — garnet stays cool to the touch.

How hard is Garnet?

Garnet is a family of minerals rather than one, which is why its range runs from 6.5 to 7.5; the common red almandine and pyrope sit in the upper half, so a garnet ring usually keeps its polish.

What Pliny the Elder wrote about Garnet

Pliny on carbunculus
“In the first rank among these is carbunculus, so called from its resemblance to fire; though in reality it is proof against the action of that element: hence it is that some persons call these stones “acaustoi.””
Pliny the Elder, The Natural History, translated by John Bostock and H. T. Riley (London: H. G. Bohn, 1855–57), book 37, chapter 25 — read the original text. Carbunculus, “little coal”, was the Roman name for glowing red stones, garnet among them; English used “carbuncle” the same way. Who Pliny was and why we quote him →
