Buying

Buying Carnelian: fakes, value and treatments

What it is confused with

Heated or dyed agate and chalcedony, and glass. Dyed stones often show stripes of color; natural carnelian has cloudy color distribution.

What decides the price

An even, translucent orange to red. Inexpensive and widely available.

Where it is used

Beads, seals and signet rings since the Bronze Age.

A less familiar fact

Etched carnelian beads made in the Indus Valley more than 4,000 years ago have been found in the royal tombs of Ur in Mesopotamia.

Practical

Caring for Carnelian

How to clean it

Warm soapy water. Avoid prolonged sunlight, which fades the orange.

How to tell it is real

Most commercial carnelian is heat-treated agate, which is traditional and acceptable. Dyed material shows color in stripes rather than a natural cloudy gradation.

How hard is Carnelian?

Carnelian is chalcedony and tough for its hardness, which is why seals and signet rings have been cut from it since the Bronze Age. Long sunlight can fade its orange.
