What it stands for, and where that came from

Persistence directed at one spot rather than spread thin.

Honoured in: Roman Picus, a king turned into the bird by Circe; associated with rain across several Native American traditions.

The animal itself

A woodpecker strikes at up to 20 times a second and decelerates at over 1 000 g without brain injury — the skull, a specialised hyoid bone and the small brain size all contribute.

The symbolism usually grew out of the behaviour rather than the other way round — which is the part worth keeping when the rest is set aside.
