The animal itself

Beavers are triggered to build by the sound of running water and will dam a loudspeaker playing it. Their dams create wetlands that support entire ecosystems, making them one of the few animals that engineer habitat at scale.

The symbolism usually grew out of the behaviour rather than the other way round — which is the part worth keeping when the rest is set aside.
