What the numbers show

  • The lunar new year fell in February in 70 of the 110 years and in January in the other 40.
  • Earliest: 21 January 1966; latest: 20 February 1985. Anyone born before the date belongs to the previous animal.
  • On average 35 of the 59 days of January and February still belong to the previous year’s animal.

How it was computed

New year dates tabulated from the traditional lunisolar calendar (Chinese astronomical almanac data as published by the Hong Kong Observatory). Animal, element and polarity follow the sexagenary cycle; the last column is counted from the date.

How it was checked

Every date falls between 21 January and 20 February, as the calendar rule requires — the new year is the second new moon after the winter solstice, rarely the third.
