Rose pink with black manganese veining

Rhodonite

Rhodonite is manganese inosilicate (MnSiO₃), rose pink with black manganese veining, rated 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale. Traditionally, it is associated with repair after conflict and forgiving without forgetting — attributed, not demonstrated.

Properties

Composition Manganese inosilicate (MnSiO₃)
Hardness (Mohs) 5.5–6.5
Crystal system Triclinic
Color Rose pink with black manganese veining
Mined in Russia (Ural), Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Madagascar

Worth knowing

The black veins are manganese oxide formed as the stone weathered — the contrast is decay, structurally speaking, and it is the reason the stone is prized.

History

Mined in the Urals from the 1790s and used for large decorative pieces in Saint Petersburg.

Buying

Buying Rhodonite: fakes, value and treatments

What it is confused with

Rhodochrosite, which is pink with white bands and softer. Rhodonite's pink is typically veined with black manganese oxide.

What decides the price

Inexpensive; a strong pink with crisp black veining is preferred.

Where it is used

Large decorative carvings and vases, especially in Russian imperial workshops.

A less familiar fact

The sarcophagus of Empress Maria Alexandrovna in St Petersburg's Peter and Paul Cathedral is carved from Ural rhodonite.

Practical

Caring for Rhodonite

How to clean it

Warm soapy water and a soft cloth.

How to tell it is real

Rhodochrosite is the frequent confusion, not a fake. Rhodonite carries black manganese veining; rhodochrosite shows white banding instead.

How hard is Rhodonite?

Rhodonite is about as hard as window glass, so beads and cabochons slowly lose their shine if they rub against harder stones; it is best stored on its own. Only Opal shares its place on our scale. Among the stones in this reference, the next softer is Sodalite (5.5–6) and the next harder Moonstone (6–6.5).
